Les bureaux de vote resteront ouverts jusqu'à 19h00. Les Portugais, tant au pays qu'à l'étranger, détermineront s'ils départagent les favoris – dont l'ancienne figure socialiste Pedro Nuno Santos, le dirigeant conservateur Luís Montenegro ou la surprenante candidate d'extrême droite, André Ventura – dès ce soir, ou s'ils devront revenir aux urnes le 8 février prochain pour un duel final.

Portugal on Edge: Polls Open for a Historic and Undecided Presidential Election
Sunday, January 18th, marks a decisive moment for Portuguese democracy. Starting at 08:00 AM local time (UTC), voters headed to the polls to elect their next head of state in a race that promises to be tight and could go down in history.
No fewer than eleven candidates – ten men and only one woman – are vying for the highest office, suggesting an unprecedented fragmentation of the vote. The mandatory exit of the highly popular outgoing President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, in power since 2016, has created a vacuum conducive to an open and unpredictable race.
All eyes are on the symbolic 50% threshold. According to all pre-election polls, none of the contenders for the Belém Palace seem capable of crossing it tonight. The prospect of a second round, a rarity in Portuguese political life, therefore looms large. One has to go back to 1986, and the election of Mário Soares, to find such a scenario.
Polling stations will remain open until 7:00 PM. The Portuguese, both at home and abroad, will determine whether they decide between the frontrunners – including former socialist heavyweight Pedro Nuno Santos, conservative leader Luís Montenegro, or the surprising far-right candidate André Ventura – tonight, or whether they will have to return to the polls on February 8th for a final runoff.
Preliminary results are expected overnight, and all of Europe will be watching this democratic test in one of its most stable members. Portugal is writing a new chapter in its political history today.
