Madagascar Appoints "Rebirth" Government Amidst Constitutional Crisis
A new ministerial team, appointed by self-proclaimed President Michaël Randrianirina, aims to chart a new course following the controversial ousting of Andry Rajoelina.
In a climate of high political tension, the future of Madagascar is being decided within the walls of the Iavoloha presidential palace. This Thursday, the national broadcaster TVM unveiled the long-awaited composition of the "government of rebirth," a team placed under the authority of Colonel Michaël Randrianirina, who was brought to power by a series of events his opponents label a coup d'état.
This announcement marks a crucial new step in the crisis that has shaken the Great Island since the National Assembly voted to oust President Andry Rajoelina on October 14, citing his "absence." A decision urgently validated by the High Constitutional Court, which subsequently handed the country's leadership to the armed forces.
A Team to Turn the Page on Rajoelina
Major General Maminirina Ely Razafitombo takes the strategic portfolio of the Armed Forces, a key position to ensure the stability of the new regime. Malagasy diplomacy will be led by Christine Razanamahasoa, while the reins of Economy and Finance go to Ramiarison Herinjatovo Aimé.
The Interior and Decentralization are entrusted to Hanitra Rakotondrabe, and Justice to Fanirisoa Ernaivo. Signifying the importance placed on this transition, Lobo Hanitriniaina Razafimanatsoa was appointed Minister of State in charge of State Reform, a monumental mission ahead.
A Contested Legitimacy
This government is the direct product of a lightning-fast political process. Inaugurated on October 17 by the High Constitutional Court as the "President of the Rebirth," Michaël Randrianirina quickly appointed Herintsalama Rajaonarivelo as Prime Minister, tasked with forming this team.
However, the shadow of former President Andry Rajoelina still looms. His supporters denounce an unconstitutional maneuver and are calling for resistance, promising a period of uncertainty and potential confrontation. The international community, particularly the African Union, is watching the situation with extreme vigilance and has not yet recognized the new government.
The "rebirth" of Madagascar is therefore underway, but it promises to be perilous, torn between the will to turn a page and the heavy questions surrounding its legitimacy. The nation is holding its breath.
