Incident diplomatique à Yaoundé : Taïwan boycotte le sommet ministériel de l’OMC

Le sommet ministériel de l’Organisation mondiale du commerce (OMC), actuellement en cours à Yaoundé, est secoué par un incident diplomatique d’envergure internationale. Taïwan a officiellement décidé de se retirer des travaux après avoir été qualifié de « province de Chine » sur les documents de visa délivrés à ses délégués.

Une désignation jugée inacceptable par Taipei, qui y voit une atteinte directe à son statut au sein de l’organisation.

Selon des sources diplomatiques, il s’agit de la première fois depuis 2001 que Taïwan se retire d’une conférence ministérielle de l’OMC. Le ministère taïwanais des Affaires étrangères s’est dit « profondément outragé » par cette qualification qu’il considère comme « déplacée et politiquement motivée ».

Taipei rappelle qu’il a adhéré à l’OMC en tant que membre à part entière, sous un statut distinct, et non comme une subdivision administrative de la République populaire de Chine.

Tentative de médiation avortée

Avec l’appui du secrétariat de l’OMC et du Japon, Taïwan aurait accordé aux autorités camerounaises une opportunité de corriger la formulation litigieuse figurant sur les documents officiels. Une fenêtre diplomatique qui, selon les informations disponibles, n’a pas été saisie.

Le Cameroun aurait maintenu la désignation incriminée, estimant qu’elle reflète sa position de politique étrangère alignée sur le principe d’« une seule Chine ». Les autorités n’ont, pour l’heure, pas publié de communiqué officiel détaillé sur l’affaire.

Yaoundé sous pression diplomatique

Cet épisode place le Cameroun au cœur d’une tension géopolitique sensible entre Pékin et Taipei. En accueillant un sommet d’une institution multilatérale stratégique comme l’OMC, Yaoundé se retrouve exposé aux équilibres complexes de la diplomatie internationale.

The WTO Ministerial Conference currently taking place in Yaoundé has been shaken by a significant diplomatic incident. Taiwan has officially withdrawn from the proceedings after being described as a “province of China” on visa accreditation documents issued to its delegation.

Taipei considers this designation unacceptable and views it as a direct challenge to its status within the organization.

First Withdrawal Since 2001

According to diplomatic sources, this marks the first time since 2001 that Taiwan has pulled out of a WTO Ministerial Conference. Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated it was “deeply outraged” by what it described as an inappropriate and politically motivated classification.

Taiwan recalls that it joined the WTO as a full member under a distinct status, not as a subnational entity of the People’s Republic of China.

Failed Mediation Attempt

With the support of the WTO Secretariat and Japan, Taiwan reportedly offered Cameroonian authorities an opportunity to correct the wording on the official documents. That diplomatic window, however, was not taken.

Cameroon allegedly maintained that the designation reflects its foreign policy stance aligned with the “One China” principle and declined to revise the documents. No detailed official statement has yet been released by Cameroonian authorities.

Diplomatic Pressure on Yaoundé
