AFCON 2025: CAS delays Senegal-Morocco verdict until late November as suspense continues

The uncertainty surrounding the official winner of AFCON 2025 will continue for several more weeks. On Monday, October 19, 2026, the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) announced that its decision in the dispute between Senegal and Morocco is now expected at the end of November 2026. Following the hearing held in Lausanne, Switzerland, on October 8, the arbitrators are continuing their deliberations before issuing a full award setting out the legal grounds for their decision. Both sides must now wait longer for a ruling that could determine the fate of the continental trophy.

AFCON 2025: CAS confirms late-November ruling

Senegalese and Moroccan supporters will have to remain patient. In a statement released on October 19, CAS provided an update on the timetable for its examination of the appeal lodged by the Senegalese Football Federation (FSF) against the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF).

“The Panel has commenced its deliberations and is continuing its work,” the Lausanne-based institution stated.

CAS explained that the arbitrators had decided to issue a full award, including the legal grounds for their decision. Preparing this award will require several additional weeks.

“The CAS award is expected at the end of November 2026,” the statement confirmed.

The announcement puts an end to speculation that a ruling might be imminent. However, no exact date has been provided. The decision is expected towards the end of November, but the precise day remains unknown.

A reasoned decision rather than a quick verdict

When the proceedings began, CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb indicated that a decision could be delivered within a few days or weeks, particularly if the arbitrators chose to prepare a full ruling explaining the legal grounds for their decision.

The October 19 statement confirms that this is the approach they have adopted.

This means the arbitrators will not simply announce the outcome of the appeal. Their award will also explain the legal reasoning behind their decision, taking into account the arguments presented by the parties and the applicable regulations.

In a case of such significance for African football, this legal reasoning will be particularly important. It should clarify how CAS interprets the regulations invoked by the parties and the circumstances that led CAF to change the official result of the final.

However, the additional time required does not, by itself, indicate how the case will be decided. It gives neither Senegal nor Morocco a demonstrated advantage.

Senegal, Morocco and CAF await the arbitrators' assessment

On October 8, 2026, CAS held a closed-door hearing at its headquarters in Lausanne. The proceedings concern the appeal filed by the FSF against CAF and the FRMF. The positions of all three parties are therefore central to the arbitration.

Senegal is challenging CAF's decision to declare it to have forfeited the final and award Morocco a 3-0 victory. The FSF is seeking to overturn the disciplinary ruling and defend the result achieved on the pitch.

Morocco, meanwhile, wants to preserve the benefit of CAF's decision awarding it the title. CAF is also a respondent in the proceedings because its ruling is the central subject of the appeal.

Since the hearing concluded, the arbitral panel has been examining the legal arguments presented by the parties. As the proceedings were held behind closed doors, no further details about the deliberations have been officially disclosed.

How the AFCON final became a legal dispute

The AFCON 2025 final took place in Rabat, Morocco, on January 18, 2026. Senegal won 1-0 after extra time against the host nation.

However, events during the match led to disciplinary proceedings. On March 17, 2026, CAF declared Senegal to have forfeited the match and officially recorded a 3-0 victory for Morocco.

The Senegalese Football Federation subsequently appealed to CAS to challenge that decision. The case has since become one of the most closely watched disputes in African football, attracting attention from supporters and sports-governance observers alike.

The stakes extend beyond the tournament's official record. The award will determine the legal status of CAF's decision and clarify its consequences for the two football federations.

Late November: African football awaits the outcome

With the new timetable announced, Senegal and Morocco must wait several more weeks to learn the outcome of the proceedings. Senegal's supporters are hoping for a ruling that could overturn the sanction imposed on their team. Moroccan supporters, meanwhile, will be looking for confirmation of the title officially awarded to their national side.

CAS has also reiterated that only information published through its official channels should be regarded as authoritative. Any further announcement concerning the case will be published on its website.

Until the end of November 2026, the uncertainty will therefore remain. The arbitrators' reasoned award is now the decisive next step in this legal and sporting dispute.

The verdict is approaching, but the official winner of AFCON 2025 remains at the centre of a legal battle that could leave a lasting mark on African football.
