CAF Champions League: Zamalek stun APR FC late, while Pyramids FC secure narrow away win
Egyptian clubs Zamalek SC and Pyramids FC made winning starts to the first leg of the second preliminary round of the 2026-2027 CAF Champions League. Zamalek defeated Rwanda's APR FC 1-0 in Kigali with a late goal, while Pyramids FC claimed a 1-0 victory over South Sudan's El Merriekh Bentiu. Both sides now have an advantage ahead of the return fixtures.
Egyptian clubs made their mark in Africa's premier club competition on Friday, October 16. Zamalek SC and Pyramids FC both secured 1-0 away victories, putting themselves in a promising position ahead of the second legs.
While Zamalek had to wait until the closing moments to break APR FC's resistance in Kigali, Pyramids FC took the lead through Saber in the first half and held on for the win against El Merriekh Bentiu.
The results give both Egyptian teams an advantage, although neither has secured qualification for the group stage.
APR FC 0-1 Zamalek: Nasser Mansy delivers a late blow
APR FC suffered a painful defeat in front of their home supporters at Amahoro Stadium in Kigali. The Rwandan side put up a disciplined performance and kept Zamalek at bay for most of the contest in a closely fought tactical battle.
However, just as the match appeared to be heading for a goalless draw, the Egyptian visitors found the decisive breakthrough.
Nasser Mansy Dessouky Ahmed Elsayed scored in the closing moments of regulation time to hand Zamalek a crucial 1-0 victory away from home.
The result will be particularly disappointing for APR FC, who had worked hard to contain their opponents but were ultimately undone late in the game. In continental knockout football, a single moment of quality can make all the difference.
For Zamalek, the victory represents an important step towards the next round. Keeping a clean sheet away from home puts the Cairo-based club in a favourable position ahead of the return leg in Egypt.
APR FC face a difficult challenge in Cairo
The Rwandan side now faces an uphill task if it hopes to remain in the competition. APR FC will need to overturn the deficit in the return fixture while finding a way to break down Zamalek's defence.
The Egyptian club showed patience and composure in Kigali, qualities that could prove decisive again in the second leg. APR FC, meanwhile, must become more effective in attack without leaving too much space for their opponents.
The tie is not over, but the Rwandan side will need a much stronger result in Cairo to keep its qualification hopes alive.
Pyramids FC 1-0 El Merriekh Bentiu: Saber makes the difference
Pyramids FC also secured a narrow victory in the first leg, defeating South Sudanese side El Merriekh Bentiu 1-0.
Saber scored in the 32nd minute to give the Egyptian club the lead. Despite El Merriekh Bentiu's efforts to find an equaliser, Pyramids FC held on to secure the win.
The match ended on a tense note when Mahmoud Marei was sent off in the 89th minute, leaving Pyramids FC to finish the game with ten men.
The dismissal could become a factor in the preparations for the return fixture, depending on the applicable disciplinary rules. Pyramids FC will need to manage the situation carefully as it prepares to host the South Sudanese side in Egypt.
El Merriekh Bentiu still have a chance
Despite the defeat, El Merriekh Bentiu remain in contention. With only one goal separating the teams, the South Sudanese club can still attempt to turn the tie around in the second leg.
The return match is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026, in Egypt. El Merriekh Bentiu will need to be more clinical in front of goal, while Pyramids FC will aim to protect its advantage and secure a place in the next stage.
Two Egyptian victories, but qualification is not yet secured
The opening results are encouraging for both Egyptian clubs. Zamalek showed composure to snatch victory late in Rwanda, while Pyramids FC relied on Saber's first-half goal to take a narrow lead into the return leg.
These results underline the importance of efficiency in the CAF Champions League preliminary rounds. A single goal can provide a valuable advantage, but a narrow margin leaves room for a comeback.
The return fixtures will therefore be decisive. Zamalek must finish the job against APR FC in Cairo, while Pyramids FC will face El Merriekh Bentiu again on October 24 in Egypt.
For both Egyptian teams, the objective is now clear: turn their away victories into qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage.
