France: At Least 19 Injured in Minibus-Train Collision Near Channel Tunnel
At least 19 people were injured when a minibus collided with a train near the French entrance to the Channel Tunnel.
French radio station RTL, citing the prefecture, reported that the injured included the minibus driver and 18 passengers.
BFMTV reported that five people were in critical condition, although their lives were not believed to be in immediate danger.
The minibus was carrying truck drivers who were preparing to board a LeShuttle train service, which transports vehicles and their passengers between France and the United Kingdom through the Channel Tunnel.
The collision disrupted Eurostar services between the two countries. LeShuttle operations were also temporarily suspended.
During a press briefing at around 10:30 p.m. local time, Calais sub-prefect Agathe Cury said LeShuttle traffic had returned to normal.
An investigation into suspected involuntary injuries has been opened, the public prosecutor in Boulogne-sur-Mer told Agence France-Presse (AFP). The precise circumstances of the collision have yet to be established.
Turkey: Istanbul Flood Death Toll Rises to Four
The death toll from torrential rain and flooding in Istanbul has risen to four following the discovery of the body of Turgut Dursun, a 66-year-old resident who had been reported missing.
Turkish television channel Habertürk reported that his body was found beneath a bridge in the Ayaza?a district, one of the areas hardest hit by the severe weather.
Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi had earlier said that search operations were underway to find five missing people. One of them subsequently made contact after managing to recharge a mobile phone.
Following the discovery of Dursun's body, three people remained missing in Istanbul, according to the reported figures.
The scale of the damage reflects the severity of the rainfall. Over the past three days, emergency services evacuated 3,057 people and moved them to safe locations.
Authorities recorded 48 landslides and the collapse of 53 retaining walls across 39 districts of the city. Damage assessments are continuing.
In Ayaza?a, where the weather was particularly severe, approximately 300 commercial premises and 200 vehicles were damaged.
The heavy rainfall also affected neighbouring Kocaeli province, where it triggered landslides and flooding.
Pakistan: 35 Dead After School Roof Collapses
Pakistan is mourning the deaths of 35 people following the collapse of the roof of a private school in Peshawar, in the country's northwest.
Geo TV, citing police, reported that the victims included 34 students and one teacher.
Rescue operations lasted approximately five hours. Most of the victims were under the age of 13. Another 45 people were injured.
Questions have been raised about the circumstances surrounding the collapse. According to ARY News, construction errors may have contributed to the disaster.
The school's owner has been detained. He has blamed the heavy rainfall for the collapse.
Investigators will need to establish the exact cause of the incident and determine whether any parties bear responsibility.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about school building safety, construction standards and the protection of children in potentially unsafe structures.
Republic of the Congo: More Than 16,700 People Displaced by Flooding
In Central Africa, the Republic of the Congo is facing a major humanitarian emergency after flooding struck the country's northeastern region.
According to the Journal de Brazza, citing government figures, more than 16,700 people have been left without shelter following heavy rainfall in recent days.
The Likouala department has become the epicentre of the disaster. More than 2,700 homes across 11 villages have been flooded, forcing thousands of residents to leave their communities.
The situation is particularly serious in Épéna, where approximately half of the localities have been affected by the flooding.
The Congolese government has ordered the immediate mobilisation of emergency supplies and the delivery of humanitarian assistance to affected areas.
The Ministry of Defence has also been asked to provide transport helicopters to help emergency teams reach affected communities and deliver essential supplies to areas that are difficult to access.
The scale of displacement and damage to homes highlights the challenges facing authorities as they work to protect residents and organise relief operations.
A Heavy Human Toll Across Several Continents
From France to Turkey, Pakistan and the Republic of the Congo, these four incidents have caused significant human suffering.
The collision near the Channel Tunnel left at least 19 people injured. Flooding in Istanbul has killed four people, with three still reported missing. In Pakistan, the collapse of a school roof killed 35 people, including 34 children. Meanwhile, flooding in the Republic of the Congo has left more than 16,700 people without shelter.
