  • 1- Cameroun : 15 or, 3 argent, 1 bronze

  • 2- France : 1 or, 5 argent, 4 bronze

  • 3- Côte d'Ivoire : 1 or, 3 argent, 6 bronze

Nanbudo World Championships 2026: Cameroon Crowned World Champions in Yaoundé

History was made in Yaoundé. For the first time ever on African soil, the 8th Nanbudo World Championships ended in a Cameroonian triumph: 15 gold, 3 silver and 1 bronze medals.

A one-sided medal table

Four days of competition, 18 nations and a clear verdict: Cameroon finished top of the medal table. With 15 world titles, the host nation dominated the field and reaped the rewards of years of hard work on the tatami.

The final standings by nation:

  • 1- Cameroon: 15 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze

  • 2- France: 1 gold, 5 silver, 4 bronze

  • 3- Ivory Coast: 1 gold, 3 silver, 6 bronze

The gap speaks for itself. France and Ivory Coast each won a single title, while the Cameroonians took fifteen, a show of strength in front of their home crowd.

A historic edition on two counts

This was no ordinary event. It was the first Nanbudo World Championships ever held in Africa, and it coincided with the 50th anniversary of Nanbudo's introduction in Cameroon. Half a century after the discipline took root in the country, Cameroonians celebrated in the best possible way.

The competition took place in the presence of Sonia Valette Nanbu, president of the World Nanbudo Federation and wife of the discipline's founder, Yoshinao Nanbu.

Authorities and organizers praised

According to Sonia Valette Nanbu, the success of the event rested on two pillars: the commitment of the Cameroonian authorities and the mobilization of the local organizing committee, led by Prof. Justine Diffo Tchunkam, president of the Cameroonian Nanbudo Federation.

Me Kouassi Komenan, president of the international committee, shared that view. He praised the enormous amount of work done, despite the difficulties, to turn the World Championships into a true celebration of martial arts.

What is Nanbudo?

Nanbudo is a Japanese martial art derived from karate. It stands apart from other combat sports through its holistic approach, which combines self-defense, health and personal development. That philosophy, broader than performance alone, is what makes it unique.

See you in 2030

The curtain has fallen on Yaoundé, but attention is already turning to the future. A call for bids has been launched to host the 9th edition in 2030.
