Ivory Coast: Could Sébastien Haller make a return to the Elephants?

Following a disappointing international window in attacking terms, Ivory Coast could turn to a familiar face. According to several reports, coach Hervé Renard is considering recalling Sébastien Haller to the national team as early as the November international break.

Could Ivory Coast's 0-1 defeat to Cameroon in Ebimpé accelerate Sébastien Haller's return to the Elephants?

That possibility is reportedly gaining momentum within the Ivorian camp. Coach Hervé Renard is said to be considering bringing back the former Borussia Dortmund striker to strengthen an attacking department that has struggled to deliver consistently.

However, no official confirmation has yet been issued by the Ivorian Football Federation or the coach.

Haller as the answer to Ivory Coast's attacking problems?

Recent performances from Ange-Yoan Bonny, Elye Wahi and Rayan Fofana are reportedly causing concern within the coaching staff.

Against Cameroon, Ivory Coast struggled to turn their attacking opportunities into goals. Despite Renard's changes, the Elephants failed to find the net in front of their home supporters.

The situation could push the coach towards a more experienced solution.

That is where Sébastien Haller comes into the picture.

The hero of AFCON 2023 could return

Haller remains closely associated with Ivory Coast's historic triumph at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

The striker scored the decisive goal in the final against Nigeria, securing Ivory Coast's third AFCON title.

His experience and status could therefore be valuable as Renard looks for greater efficiency in the final third.

After a difficult period, Haller is reportedly back to a good level of performance in Japan, where he is continuing his career.

According to several reports, the striker would now be open to returning to the national team.

Haller reportedly available for a comeback

Reports suggest that the former Borussia Dortmund forward has made his availability known to the Ivorian camp.

The next decision would therefore rest with Hervé Renard.

The French coach could include Haller in his squad for the November international window.

If confirmed, the decision would send a strong message to Ivory Coast's other attacking options.

Cameroon's victory adds pressure

The context makes a potential recall even more significant.

Ivory Coast lost 0-1 to Cameroon in Ebimpé on Saturday, with Bil Nsongo scoring shortly after half-time.

Renard had heavily rotated his squad for the match, making ten changes to his starting XI.

The friendly was designed to assess different players and options ahead of future competitive fixtures, but Ivory Coast's attacking performance ultimately failed to convince.

Young winger Yan Diomandé admitted after the game that the extensive changes had an impact.

“It is true that it is a friendly, but an Ivory Coast-Cameroon match is always special. We wanted to win, but the coach wanted to try something. Unfortunately, it did not work.”

Could Haller change the picture?

A return for Haller would obviously not solve all of Ivory Coast's attacking problems.

However, his profile would bring experience, physical presence and international pedigree to the forward line.

Most importantly, Haller knows exactly what it means to play under the pressure of the Ivorian shirt.

The question now is whether Hervé Renard will once again trust the man who delivered one of the most memorable goals in recent Ivorian football history.

If the reports are confirmed, Sébastien Haller could make his return to the Elephants as early as November.
