Palais de l’Unité à Yaoundé : un officier de 29 ans arrêté après avoir dit vouloir « prendre le pouvoir »

YAOUNDÉ — Un incident impliquant un jeune officier de l’armée camerounaise s’est produit mercredi 16 septembre 2026 au palais de l’Unité, à Yaoundé. Le militaire, âgé de 29 ans, aurait déclaré qu’il était venu « prendre le pouvoir » au président Paul Biya, avant d’être maîtrisé et conduit auprès des services de sécurité.

Selon un rapport sécuritaire attribué à la brigade d’Etoudi, Ntsama Biting Benoît, présenté comme un militaire en service au CAT-BIR, a été intercepté aux environs de 14h30 à l’intérieur du palais de l’Unité.

Interpellé avec du cannabis et un briquet

Le rapport cité indique que le militaire était en possession de cannabis et d’un briquet au moment de son interpellation.

Il aurait alors tenu des propos selon lesquels il venait « prendre le pouvoir » au président de la République. Face à la situation, il aurait été maîtrisé avant d’être conduit à la brigade d’Etoudi.

L’intervention aurait été effectuée par un officier de marine affecté à la Garde présidentielle, selon le même document sécuritaire.

Le SEMIL ouvre une enquête

Après son passage à la brigade d’Etoudi, Ntsama Biting Benoît a été remis à l’unité SEMIL du Centre, chargée des investigations dans le cadre de cette affaire.

Une enquête a été ouverte afin d’établir les circonstances exactes de l’incident, notamment les motivations du militaire et la portée réelle des propos qui lui sont attribués.

À ce stade, les éléments disponibles ne permettent pas d’établir qu’une tentative organisée de prise de pouvoir a effectivement été engagée. L’expression « prendre le pouvoir » correspond aux propos rapportés dans le document sécuritaire et devra être replacée dans son contexte par les enquêteurs.

Un incident dans un site hautement sécurisé

Le palais de l’Unité, siège de la présidence de la République à Yaoundé, constitue l’un des sites institutionnels les plus sécurisés du Cameroun. L’interpellation d’un militaire à l’intérieur de cette enceinte intervient donc dans un contexte particulièrement sensible.

Les investigations du SEMIL devraient notamment permettre de déterminer comment l’officier a pu accéder aux lieux, dans quelles circonstances il a tenu les propos rapportés et s’il agissait seul.

Aucune conclusion définitive ne peut être tirée avant la fin des investigations et, le cas échéant, les suites judiciaires qui pourraient en découler.

Yaoundé Unity Palace: 29-year-old officer arrested after allegedly saying he came to 'take power'

YAOUNDÉ — A 29-year-old military officer was reportedly arrested inside Cameroon’s Unity Palace in Yaoundé on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, after allegedly saying that he had come to “take power” from President Paul Biya.

According to a security report attributed to the Etoudi Brigade, Ntsama Biting Benoît, reportedly serving with the CAT-BIR, was intercepted at around 2:30 p.m. inside the presidential compound.

Officer reportedly found with cannabis

The report states that the officer was allegedly found in possession of cannabis and a lighter when he was intercepted.

He reportedly made statements suggesting that he had come to “take power” from President Paul Biya. He was subsequently restrained and taken to the Etoudi Brigade.

The intervention was reportedly carried out by a naval officer assigned to the Presidential Guard, according to the same security document.

SEMIL investigation launched

Ntsama Biting Benoît was subsequently handed over to the Centre SEMIL unit, where an investigation has been opened.

Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances surrounding the incident, the context of the statements attributed to the officer and whether he acted alone.

At this stage, the available information does not establish that an organized attempt to seize power actually took place. The phrase “take power” comes from the statements attributed to the officer in the security report and will have to be assessed within the context of the ongoing investigation.

Incident at a highly secured presidential site

The Unity Palace in Yaoundé, which houses Cameroon’s presidency, is one of the country’s most highly secured institutional sites.

The reported arrest of a military officer inside the compound therefore raises questions about the circumstances of his presence there and the events leading to his interception.
