Yomif Kedjelcha stuns the world again with a new half-marathon record

Yomif Kedjelcha runs 56:51 in Buenos Aires to set a new half-marathon world record, once again surpassing Jacob Kiplimo in the distance.

Yomif Kedjelcha makes history again with half-marathon world record in Buenos Aires

Ethiopian distance runner Yomif Kedjelcha has once again rewritten the history of the half-marathon. In Buenos Aires, the 29-year-old athlete clocked 56 minutes and 51 seconds over 21.1 km to set a new world record.

The half-marathon world record has a new benchmark. Yomif Kedjelcha delivered a stunning performance in Buenos Aires, completing the 21.1-kilometre distance in 56 minutes and 51 seconds.

The Ethiopian athlete once again takes centre stage in a discipline that has witnessed a remarkable battle between him and Ugandan star Jacob Kiplimo.

Kedjelcha's new mark improves on the previous recognized world-record performance of 57:20, set by Kiplimo in Lisbon in March.

Kedjelcha takes the record again

The race for the fastest half-marathon in history has been particularly intense in recent years.

In February, Jacob Kiplimo ran an extraordinary 56:42 in Barcelona. However, the performance was not ratified as a world record because the course did not meet the required standards.

Kedjelcha's 56:51 in Buenos Aires therefore becomes the new benchmark, adding another chapter to the rivalry between two of the world's leading distance runners.

He had already broken the record in Valencia

This is not Kedjelcha's first time at the top of the half-marathon rankings.

In October 2024, he ran 57:30 in Valencia, Spain, breaking Kiplimo's previous world record of 57:31, set in Lisbon in November 2021.

Now, the Ethiopian has gone even faster, breaking the 57-minute barrier and setting the clock at 56:51.

A world-class résumé

Kedjelcha's achievements extend far beyond the half-marathon.

The 29-year-old Ethiopian also holds the world record for the 10 km, with 26:31. He has won two world championship silver medals in the event, in 2019 and 2025.

On the indoor circuit, he is a two-time world champion over 3,000 metres, winning gold in 2016 and 2018.

His latest performance in Buenos Aires further strengthens his reputation as one of the most accomplished distance runners of his generation.

The new half-marathon world record now stands at 56 minutes and 51 seconds. With Kiplimo still pushing the limits of the event, the battle for supremacy over 21.1 km is far from over.
