Une arrestation politique au lendemain de la réélection de Paul Biya
Selon les avocats, Anicet Ekanè avait été « enlevé » le 24 octobre à Douala, au lendemain de la 8? réélection du président Paul Biya. Acteur majeur de l’opposition et soutien de candidat Issa Tchiroma Bakary lors de la présidentielle du 12 octobre 2025, il aurait été ciblé pour des raisons « strictement politiques ».
Déporté à Yaoundé, il aurait été détenu dans des conditions qualifiées d’« inhumaines », tout comme d’autres opposants arrêtés après la contestation post-électorale.
Privé de son appareil respiratoire : « une issue fatale connue d’avance »
Le collectif rappelle que M. Ekanè souffrait de graves pathologies respiratoires et cardiaques nécessitant une assistance respiratoire quotidienne. Lors de sa garde à vue au Centre Médical de la Gendarmerie, cet appareil lui aurait été confisqué.
Les avocats estiment que ceux qui ont pris cette décision « ne pouvaient ignorer l’issue fatale » que cela entraînerait.
Des alertes ignorées malgré la dégradation de son état
Le 30 novembre, face à l’aggravation rapide de son état, la famille et son parti politique avaient demandé un transfert immédiat vers un établissement hospitalier. Ces sollicitations, selon le communiqué, sont restées « lettre morte ».
Le collectif dénonce une « abstention volontaire » ayant contribué directement à la mort d’Anicet Ekanè.
Bataille autour de l’autopsie : la famille réclame un médecin indépendant
La famille exige qu’un médecin indépendant — camerounais ou étranger — participe à l’autopsie et aux constatations médico-légales. Elle refuse que l’examen se déroule sans cette garantie.
Pourtant, selon les proches, les autorités ont fixé l’autopsie « à 8h00 précise » ce 2 décembre, sans leur laisser le temps nécessaire pour mobiliser un expert indépendant.
Vers des actions judiciaires nationales et internationales
Les avocats annoncent envisager toutes les initiatives judiciaires « aux niveaux national, régional et international » afin d’établir la vérité et de poursuivre « tous les responsables publics, y compris les donneurs d’ordre ».
Ils appellent également la communauté internationale à intervenir pour rappeler à l’État camerounais ses obligations nationales et internationales, et pour garantir que justice soit faite.

A month after his alleged abduction and arbitrary detention, the death of Cameroonian opposition figure Anicet Ekanè on December 1, 2025, is generating national and international outrage. In a joint press release, his family’s lawyers — Hippolyte Meli and Emmanuel Simh from the Cameroon Bar, and Julie Jukic and William Bourdon from the Paris Bar — raise serious accusations against the authorities and announce legal actions at all levels.
A political arrest following Paul Biya’s re-election
According to the lawyers, Ekanè was abducted in Douala on October 24, one day after the proclaimed re-election of President Paul Biya. A key opposition figure who supported candidate Issa Tchiroma Bakary during the October 12 presidential election, he was allegedly targeted for purely political reasons.
Transferred to Yaoundé, he was detained in what the lawyers describe as “inhumane and arbitrary” conditions.
Deprived of his respiratory device: a “known fatal outcome”
Ekanè suffered from severe respiratory and cardiac conditions requiring daily assistance. During his detention at the National Gendarmerie Medical Center, his respiratory device was reportedly confiscated — a decision the lawyers say could only lead to a predictable fatal outcome.
Warnings ignored as his condition deteriorated
On November 30, as his health worsened dramatically, his family and political party requested an emergency transfer to a hospital. Their appeals reportedly went unanswered, contributing directly to his death.
Dispute over the autopsy: family demands independent medical oversight
The family insists that an independent doctor — Cameroonian or foreign — participate in the autopsy. They refused the procedure when this condition was not met. Despite this, relatives say authorities scheduled the autopsy for 8:00 AM on December 2, without allowing enough time to secure an independent physician.
Legal action at all levels and a call to the international community
The legal team says all possible judicial avenues — national, regional, and international — are being considered to establish the truth and hold accountable all public officials involved, including those who ordered the actions.
They call on the international community to remind Cameroon of its legal obligations and ensure full transparency and justice.
