Senegal started strong, taking the first quarter 22-19, but Mali responded brilliantly in the second quarter. With intensity on both ends of the floor, the Eagles managed to take control and led 43-35 at halftime.
Despite Senegal’s comeback attempts in the third and fourth quarters, including a barrage of three-pointers from their No. 5, Mali stayed resilient. Senegal suffered a huge blow with Badji fouling out, allowing Mali to keep their edge and close the game 87-80.
The night belonged to Mahamane Coulibaly, who delivered a monster performance. The Stade Malien center dropped 23 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists, earning MVP honors. Already decisive against Côte d’Ivoire, Coulibaly confirmed his role as the offensive leader of this ambitious Malian generation.
