Cambodia-Thailand Border Crisis: Donald Trump Brokers Surprise Ceasefire
Tensions between Cambodia and Thailand have taken a dramatic turn. Thanks to the swift mediation of U.S. President Donald Trump, the two Asian nations have agreed to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire. The announcement was made this morning by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, following a phone call with the ex-commander-in-chief.
"President Trump is deeply concerned about human losses and wants neither war nor further clashes," Hun Manet stated on social media, praising Trump’s experience in global conflict resolution.
A Truce Under American Pressure
According to Phnom Penh, Trump played a key role as mediator. After speaking with Hun Manet, he contacted Thailand’s interim Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, securing Bangkok’s agreement to halt hostilities.
"The goal is to prevent further military and civilian casualties," stressed Hun Manet. Cambodian Deputy PM Prak Sokhonn will now coordinate with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa to enforce the truce.
Trump: "Peace is the Natural Path"
On Truth Social, Trump confirmed the deal: "Thailand, like Cambodia, wants an immediate ceasefire. After speaking with both sides, peace and prosperity seem to be the natural way forward."
The breakthrough follows deadly clashes on July 24 near a disputed border zone in Cambodia’s Otdar Mean Cheay province. Thailand deployed airstrikes, while Phnom Penh cited self-defense. Provisional toll: 15 dead (including 14 civilians) and 46 wounded, per Thai authorities.
A crisis narrowly averted—thanks to an unexpected U.S. diplomatic move. Will the ceasefire hold?
