Selon L’Indépendant, le Cameroun vient d’être condamné par le Centre international pour le règlement des différends relatifs aux investissements (CIRDI) à verser la somme faramineuse de 300 millions de dollars (environ 196 milliards de Fcfa) à l’entreprise italienne Piccini, pour rupture abusive de contrat.
Ce montant vertigineux s’ajoute à une ardoise déjà lourde : plus de 250 milliards de Fcfa engloutis dans un projet toujours non réceptionné à ce jour, malgré les promesses et les échéances repoussées. The Paul Biya Stadium in Olembé is once again at the center of controversy. According to L’Indépendant, the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes (ICSID) has ordered Cameroon to pay $300 million (approx. 196 billion FCFA) to Italian construction firm Piccini for unlawful breach of contract.
This ruling follows a long list of scandals involving the project, which has already consumed over 250 billion FCFA, with the stadium still not officially completed. The report highlights overbilling, corruption, manipulation, and questionable maneuvers behind a stadium that was meant to be a national symbol.
Initially awarded to Piccini, the project changed hands in 2019 when the Italian firm was abruptly removed and replaced by Canadian company Magil, which is now also claiming unpaid dues tied to the same unfinished sports complex.
The Olembé Stadium saga is turning into a financial and reputational disaster for Cameroon, raising serious concerns about public management and transparency.
