Cameroon 2025: Dominique Yamb Defeats Dr. Jean Bahebeck in UPC Primary – A Bitter Reaction Follows
Tensions are rising within the Union of the Populations of Cameroon (UPC) following the surprising nomination of Dominique Yamb Ntimba as the party’s official candidate for the 2025 presidential election. The man he defeated, Dr. Jean Bahebeck, has responded with strong words, alleging irregularities and a lack of transparency in the internal process.
?? An Upset That Shook the Party
On April 10, 2025, the UPC officially endorsed Dominique Yamb Ntimba to carry the party’s flag in the upcoming presidential race. The announcement came as a shock to many observers and supporters, given that Dr. Bahebeck was widely seen as the natural choice, due to his longstanding involvement with the party.
In a scathing statement, Dr. Bahebeck accused party insiders of orchestrating a plot to sideline him.
“Yamb was never a member of the UPC. He was brought in from the neighborhood just to sabotage my candidacy. I welcomed him like a brother and even suggested he be registered so we could study his profile. After all, one cannot claim to represent a party without being a member,” Bahebeck said.
? Internal Rift and Disputed Endorsement
Bahebeck further criticized several UPC figures—Sylvestre Nyeck Neyck, Ikang Pascal Soho Serge, Rose Ndjie She, and Mbombok Onana Victor—for allegedly refusing to run themselves but then turning around to back a non-member as the candidate.
“They left the meeting early when defeat seemed imminent, only to rush and sign the endorsement document they later published,” he claimed.
?? A Call for Vigilance
Dr. Bahebeck ended his statement with a warning to Cameroonian citizens and media outlets:
“I urge citizens to remain vigilant and the media to share only precise and verified information.”
? A Party Divided Ahead of a National Battle?
With just months left before the 2025 presidential vote, the UPC appears to be heading into the campaign season with internal cracks. The question remains: Will the party unite behind Dominique Yamb, or will dissent and division cost it dearly at the ballot box?
