Ouganda : le roi Oyo Nyimba Rukidi IV est mort à 34 ans, après près de 31 ans sur le trône
Le royaume traditionnel du Toro, dans l’ouest de l’Ouganda, est en deuil. Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, son roi, est décédé jeudi 27 août 2026 à l’âge de 34 ans. Il avait accédé au trône alors qu’il n’était âgé que de trois ans.
La nouvelle a plongé le royaume du Toro dans la consternation. Le décès de Sa Majesté l’Omukama du Toro, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, a été annoncé par le Premier ministre du royaume, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.
Dans un communiqué, le responsable a indiqué que le souverain était décédé vers 22 heures, jeudi 27 août 2026.
« C’est avec une profonde tristesse que j’annonce le décès de Sa Majesté l’Omukama du Toro, le roi Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV », a-t-il déclaré.
Un roi monté sur le trône à seulement trois ans
Né le 16 avril 1992, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV avait connu un destin hors du commun dès son enfance.
Le jeune prince avait succédé à son père, Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, après la mort de ce dernier en septembre 1995. Le 12 septembre de la même année, alors âgé de seulement trois ans, il était officiellement monté sur le trône du Toro.
À cette époque, Rukidi IV était présenté comme le plus jeune monarque régnant au monde.
Son très jeune âge ne lui permettant évidemment pas d'assumer seul les responsabilités liées à la fonction royale, un conseil de régence avait été chargé de l'accompagner dans la gestion des affaires du royaume jusqu'à sa majorité.
Une trajectoire exceptionnelle qui aura marqué l'histoire contemporaine du Toro.
Près de 31 ans à la tête du royaume du Toro
Oyo Rukidi IV aura finalement occupé le trône pendant près de 31 années. Il était devenu au fil du temps l'une des figures traditionnelles les plus connues de l'Ouganda.
Son règne s'est inscrit dans une période où les royaumes traditionnels ougandais ont continué à jouer un rôle important dans la préservation des identités culturelles, des traditions et de la cohésion sociale, malgré l'absence de pouvoir politique officiel.
Le royaume du Toro fait en effet partie des royaumes traditionnels reconnus dans l'Ouganda moderne. Ses souverains, appelés Omukama, ne disposent pas de prérogatives politiques au sein de l'État ougandais.
Leur influence demeure toutefois considérable sur le plan culturel, historique et social, notamment auprès des communautés liées au royaume.
Un héritier doit lui succéder
Au lendemain de la disparition du souverain, une autre question se pose désormais : celle de sa succession.
Les autorités du royaume ont indiqué que Rukidi IV laisse un héritier, mais que son nom sera communiqué ultérieurement.
Cette annonce ouvre ainsi une nouvelle page dans l'histoire de la monarchie traditionnelle du Toro, près de trois décennies après l'accession au trône de l'enfant-roi devenu adulte et figure majeure de la vie culturelle de l'ouest de l'Ouganda.
À 34 ans seulement, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV laisse derrière lui un règne exceptionnel par sa durée, mais surtout par les circonstances singulières de son accession au trône.
De l'enfant de trois ans proclamé roi en 1995 au souverain disparu en 2026, son parcours restera l'un des destins monarchiques les plus atypiques de l'Afrique contemporaine.

The Toro Kingdom in western Uganda is mourning the death of its monarch, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who died on Thursday, August 27, 2026, at the age of 34. He had ascended the throne when he was just three years old.
The death of the Toro monarch has plunged the traditional kingdom into mourning. The announcement was made by the kingdom's Prime Minister, Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki.
In a statement, the Prime Minister said King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV died at around 10 p.m. on Thursday, August 27, 2026.
“It is with deep sadness that I announce the death of His Majesty the Omukama of Toro, King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV,” the statement said.
A king who ascended the throne at just three
Born on April 16, 1992, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV became monarch at an extraordinarily young age.
He succeeded his father, Patrick David Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III, following his death in September 1995. On September 12 of that year, three-year-old Rukidi IV officially became the king of Toro.
At the time, he was regarded as the world's youngest reigning monarch.
Because of his age, a regency council assisted him in managing the affairs of the kingdom until he reached adulthood.
His unusual accession made him a notable figure in Uganda's modern traditional monarchy.
Nearly 31 years on the Toro throne
Rukidi IV remained on the throne for nearly 31 years, becoming one of Uganda's best-known traditional rulers.
His reign unfolded in a period during which Uganda's traditional kingdoms continued to play an important role in preserving cultural identity, traditions and social cohesion, despite having no formal political authority.
Toro is one of the traditional kingdoms that exist within modern Uganda. Its monarchs, known as Omukama, do not exercise political power within the Ugandan state.
They nevertheless retain an important role in the cultural and social life of their communities.
An heir will be announced
Attention now turns to the succession of the Toro Kingdom.
Kingdom authorities said that Rukidi IV leaves an heir, but the name of the successor will be announced at a later date.
The announcement is expected to mark the beginning of a new chapter for the traditional monarchy, nearly three decades after Rukidi IV first became king as a three-year-old child.
