La messe d’inauguration du pontificat du pape Léon XIV est officiellement programmée pour le samedi 18 mai prochain sur la mythique place Saint-Pierre, au Vatican. L’annonce a été faite cette semaine par la préfecture de la maison pontificale, alors que les préparatifs battent leur plein dans la cité papale.
Élu à la suite du décès du pape François le 21 avril dernier, Léon XIV s’inscrit dans la continuité tout en imprimant peu à peu sa marque. Avant cette cérémonie inaugurale très attendue, le souverain pontife rencontrera le corps diplomatique accrédité auprès du Saint-Siège, ainsi que les représentants de la presse internationale.
Selon les chiffres avancés par le service de presse du Vatican, plus de 4.000 demandes d’accréditation ont été enregistrées depuis la disparition du pape François. Un engouement qui témoigne de l’intérêt mondial pour cette nouvelle étape de la vie de l’Église universelle.
Le dimanche 11 mai, Léon XIV prononcera sa première messe dominicale, notamment la prière du Regina Caeli, un moment symbolique très suivi en période pascale. Deux jours plus tard, soit le 21 mai, il tiendra sa première audience générale, une tradition du mercredi instaurée depuis plusieurs pontificats.
Par ailleurs, l’agenda liturgique prévoit également une messe dominicale le 25 mai, suivie de deux cérémonies de grande importance : la prise de possession de la basilique pontificale Saint-Jean-du-Latran, cathédrale du pape en tant qu’évêque de Rome, et celle de la basilique Sainte-Marie-Majeure, où il se recueillera comme l’avaient fait ses prédécesseurs.
Fait notable, ces deux dernières célébrations figuraient déjà dans le programme envisagé il y a dix ans par le regretté pape François, soulignant ainsi la dimension de continuité et de fidélité au magistère de l’Église.
Avec cette série de cérémonies, Léon XIV entre véritablement en fonction sous les regards du monde, mais aussi des millions de fidèles à travers le globe, y compris au Cameroun, où l’Église catholique garde une place importante dans le tissu social et spirituel.

The Catholic Church is preparing to turn a new page in its history. The inaugural Mass of the pontificate of Pope Leo XIV has been officially scheduled for Saturday, May 18, to be held at St. Peter’s Square, according to a statement from the Prefecture of the Papal Household.
Leo XIV, elected after the passing of Pope Francis on April 21, is gradually stepping into his role while honoring the traditions of his predecessors. Before the grand inaugural Mass, the new pope is expected to meet with the diplomatic corps accredited to the Holy See and hold a special audience with the international press.
The Vatican press office has revealed that over 4,000 media accreditation requests have been received since the death of Pope Francis—a clear sign of global interest in the transition of leadership at the helm of the Roman Catholic Church.
On Sunday, May 11, Pope Leo XIV will preside over his first Sunday Mass, which includes the traditional Regina Caeli prayer, observed during the Easter season. His first General Audience will follow on May 21, continuing a longstanding tradition of weekly papal teachings.
The liturgical schedule also features a Sunday Mass on May 25, followed by two major events: the taking possession of the Basilica of St. John Lateran—the official cathedral of the Bishop of Rome—and the Basilica of St. Mary Major, where the pope is expected to pray in a deeply symbolic gesture.
Interestingly, these ceremonies had already been envisioned a decade ago by the late Pope Francis, reflecting a strong sense of continuity and reverence for papal customs.
With these spiritual milestones, Pope Leo XIV is formally beginning his ministry, under the watchful eye of the global Catholic community—including millions of faithful in Cameroon, where the Church continues to play a vital role in both spiritual life and community development.
