Première étape de ce long marathon qualificatif : le tirage au sort du tour préliminaire, programmé pour ce mardi 13 janvier. Cette phase initiale concerne les douze sélections africaines les moins bien classées au dernier classement mondial de la FIFA, appelées à se disputer les six derniers billets menant à la phase de groupes.
Pour garantir un minimum d’équilibre, la CAF a réparti ces équipes en deux chapeaux. Le premier regroupe le Lesotho, le Burundi, l’Éthiopie, l’Eswatini, le Soudan du Sud et l’île Maurice. Le second chapeau comprend le Tchad, São Tomé-et-Principe, Djibouti, la Somalie, les Seychelles et l’Érythrée.
Le format retenu est classique mais sans concession : des confrontations en matchs aller-retour, chaque sélection du premier chapeau étant opposée à une équipe du second. Conformément au règlement de la CAF, la manche aller se disputera sur le terrain de la sélection la moins bien classée, un détail stratégique qui pourrait peser lourd dans des duels souvent serrés.
À l’issue de ces doubles confrontations, seules six équipes poursuivront l’aventure. Elles rejoindront alors les 42 nations déjà qualifiées pour la phase de groupes des éliminatoires, véritable théâtre des grandes ambitions continentales, où des géants comme le Cameroun, le Sénégal, l’Égypte ou le Maroc entreront en scène.
Ce tour préliminaire marque ainsi le véritable lancement de la route vers la CAN 2027, une compétition qui s’annonce déjà comme un tournant, tant sur le plan sportif qu’organisationnel, pour le football africain.
AFCON 2027: CAF officially kicks off qualifiers as Africa heads toward East Africa
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially launched the qualification campaign for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a highly anticipated tournament whose final phase will take place in East Africa. The competition will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, marking a historic first for the region.
The opening stage of this long qualifying journey begins with the preliminary round draw, scheduled for Tuesday, January 13. This round involves the twelve lowest-ranked African national teams according to the latest FIFA rankings, all competing for the final six spots in the group stage.
These teams have been divided into two pots based on their rankings. Pot one includes Lesotho, Burundi, Ethiopia, Eswatini, South Sudan, and Mauritius, while pot two features Chad, São Tomé and Príncipe, Djibouti, Somalia, Seychelles, and Eritrea.
Each team from pot one will face a team from pot two in a two-legged tie. According to CAF regulations, the first leg will be played at the home ground of the lower-ranked team, adding an extra tactical dimension to these encounters.
At the end of these playoffs, six teams will qualify for the group stage, where they will join the 42 nations already assured of participation. This preliminary round officially sets the stage for the road to AFCON 2027, a tournament expected to be a landmark event for African football.
