U23 AFCON 2027: Cameroon face Rwanda in second qualifying round
Cameroon’s U23 Indomitable Lions now know their next opponents on the road to the 2027 Africa U23 Cup of Nations in Egypt. The young Cameroonian side will face Rwanda in the second qualifying round, with a two-legged tie scheduled for November.
The first leg will be played on November 9, 2026, in Kigali, while the return leg is scheduled for November 17 in Yaoundé.
Kigali first, Yaoundé next
The schedule presents Cameroon with a demanding scenario: the Lions will have to travel to Rwanda before hosting the Amavubi in the second leg.
The first match in Kigali will therefore be crucial for Cameroon, which will then have the opportunity to settle the tie in front of its home supporters in Yaoundé.
Rwanda reached the second round after eliminating Sudan with a convincing 4-1 aggregate victory.
The Amavubi will therefore arrive in this tie with confidence, while Cameroon will have to be particularly careful in the opening leg.
One more hurdle after Rwanda
Qualifying against Rwanda would not yet guarantee Cameroon a place at the U23 AFCON finals.
A third and final qualifying round is scheduled for March 2027. That final round will determine the teams that qualify for the continental tournament.
The 2027 U23 Africa Cup of Nations is scheduled to take place in Egypt in June 2027.
For Cameroon, the objective is therefore straightforward: overcome Rwanda in November, then win the decisive final qualifying tie in March.
All second-round fixtures
The second round features 14 ties:
Burkina Faso – Zambia
DR Congo – Nigeria
Equatorial Guinea – Niger
Libya – Ghana
Tunisia – Gabon
Kenya – Ivory Coast
South Sudan – Senegal
Ethiopia – Morocco
Rwanda – Cameroon
Madagascar – South Africa
Angola – Congo
Botswana – Guinea
Eswatini – Algeria
Zimbabwe – Mali
Several heavyweight clashes are on the schedule, including DR Congo–Nigeria, Tunisia–Gabon, Kenya–Ivory Coast, Ethiopia–Morocco and Zimbabwe–Mali.
Cameroon must deliver
For the U23 Indomitable Lions, the November tie represents a major step towards Egypt.
Cameroon will first have to avoid a setback in Kigali on November 9, before attempting to finish the job at home in Yaoundé on November 17.
The road to the 2027 U23 AFCON is still long, but the next destination is now known: Kigali first, Yaoundé next.
