  • la Côte d’Ivoire ;

  • le Maroc ;

  • l’Afrique du Sud ;

  • l’Algérie ;

Une CAN 2027 déjà particulière

AFCON 2027: Could CAF remove hosting rights from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania?

Could the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations be moved away from East Africa? According to information reported by Le Monde, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) is increasingly concerned about delays in preparations by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The continental body has reportedly sounded out several major African nations as possible alternatives. However, no official decision to withdraw the tournament from the three co-hosts has been announced.

The organization of AFCON 2027 could be heading towards a major development.

The tournament was awarded jointly to Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania, but concerns have reportedly emerged over the progress of the infrastructure projects required to host the competition.

According to Le Monde, CAF is monitoring the situation closely and has reportedly begun exploring contingency options.

Concerns over infrastructure

The main issue reportedly concerns the readiness of stadiums and supporting infrastructure.

Hosting an Africa Cup of Nations requires extensive preparations involving stadiums, training facilities, accommodation, transport, security and logistics.

According to the report, CAF is concerned about whether the three East African hosts will be able to complete the required projects within the expected timeframe.

However, there has been no official CAF decision to withdraw the tournament from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

Five countries reportedly contacted

As part of a possible contingency plan, CAF has reportedly sounded out five major African football nations:

  • Ivory Coast

  • Morocco

  • South Africa

  • Algeria

  • Egypt

All five countries have significant experience with major football competitions and possess infrastructure that could potentially support a continental tournament.

Ivory Coast hosted the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, played in 2024, while Morocco has extensive experience hosting major continental and international sporting events.

South Africa hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup, while Algeria and Egypt have also organized major African football tournaments.

A major challenge for East Africa

AFCON 2027 is expected to be historic because it will be jointly hosted by three East African countries for the first time: Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

The three-country format creates significant logistical challenges.

The hosts must coordinate stadiums, training facilities, accommodation, transport and security across their respective territories.

The tournament is also expected to serve as an important milestone for football development in East Africa.

No official withdrawal yet

The distinction between exploratory contacts and an official decision is important.

The information reported by Le Monde does not mean that CAF has already removed hosting rights from Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania.

Any change would require a formal decision from CAF's competent authorities.

For now, the three countries remain the designated hosts.

A potential change would reshape AFCON 2027

If CAF ultimately decided to change the hosting arrangements, the consequences would be significant.

Any replacement host would need to demonstrate that it could rapidly provide CAF-compliant stadiums, training facilities, accommodation, transport systems and security arrangements.

That is why the five countries reportedly contacted — Ivory Coast, Morocco, South Africa, Algeria and Egypt — stand out as possible contingency options.

For now, however, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania remain the official hosts of AFCON 2027.

The coming months will therefore be crucial as CAF assesses the progress of the infrastructure projects and the readiness of the three East African nations.

The tournament remains in East Africa, but the infrastructure race is now under intense scrutiny.
