Tout part du tout premier lauréat de l’histoire du Ballon d’Or : Sir Stanley Matthews. Le choix de l’Angleterre s’explique donc principalement par ce soixante-dixième anniversaire et l’hommage rendu à Matthews. Toutefois, la possibilité que les prochaines éditions soient à nouveau organisées hors de France n’est pas exclue. Le Ballon d’Or continue son expansion et renforce son statut de marque mondiale.

Usually, the prestigious ceremony that crowns the kings and queens of the beautiful game is held in the French capital. But for its 70th edition, an exception has been made. And here’s why this symbolic choice was made.

It all starts with the very first winner in Ballon d’Or history: Sir Stanley Matthews. Created in 1956 by the French magazine *France Football*, the trophy was awarded to this English genius who was then playing for Blackpool. Seventy years later, UEFA and *France Football* have decided to pay a strong tribute to this legend of English football by staging the anniversary edition in his home country. According to UEFA, the choice of London is primarily symbolic. A powerful nod to history.

The ceremony will take place on Monday, 26 October 2026 at the famous London Palladium, the iconic theatre in the heart of London that will host the Ballon d’Or awards for the first time. Since 2024, *France Football* and UEFA have been jointly organising this major event in world football.

This is not the first time the ceremony has left Paris. Between 2010 and 2015, the editions were held in Zurich, Switzerland, in partnership with FIFA. However, Paris does not appear to have permanently lost its traditional hosting role. L’Équipe, which belongs to the same media group as France Football, explicitly refers to a temporary relocation.
