Coup de tonnerre à la FIFA : la France retire son soutien à Gianni Infantino
La Fédération française de football (FFF) tourne désormais le dos à Gianni Infantino. Après avoir soutenu le président sortant de la FIFA lorsqu’il était le seul candidat, l’instance française a décidé de ne plus appuyer sa candidature pour l’élection de mars 2027. Un désaveu majeur qui intervient sur fond de crise autour de la gouvernance de l’instance mondiale.
Gianni Infantino perd un soutien de poids dans la course à la présidence de la FIFA. La Fédération française de football (FFF) a décidé de retirer son soutien au président sortant, à l’issue d’une réunion de son comité exécutif.
Le changement de position de la France est particulièrement significatif. La FFF rappelle avoir soutenu Infantino lorsqu’il était le seul candidat à sa succession. Mais plusieurs événements survenus au cours des deux derniers mois ont conduit ses dirigeants à revoir leur position.
Désormais, la fédération française réclame une réforme en profondeur de la gouvernance du football mondial.
La FFF veut « restaurer la confiance »
Dans son communiqué, la FFF appelle à construire, avec les confédérations, les fédérations nationales mais aussi les joueurs, les supporters et l’ensemble des parties prenantes, un nouveau projet pour le football mondial.
L'objectif affiché dépasse donc la seule question de la prochaine élection présidentielle de la FIFA.
La fédération française souhaite notamment restaurer la confiance, renforcer la transparence, garantir l'indépendance et assurer l'exemplarité de l'instance dirigeante du football mondial.
Pour nourrir cette réflexion, la FFF annonce le lancement prochain d'un cycle de consultations avec des personnalités françaises et internationales reconnues pour leur expertise en matière de gouvernance, y compris au-delà du domaine sportif.
Un changement de ton particulièrement fort pour une fédération qui avait jusqu'ici apporté son soutien au dirigeant italo-suisse.
FIFA Forward Enterprise au cœur de la rupture
Le principal sujet de crispation concerne FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), le projet défendu par Gianni Infantino visant à créer une structure commerciale chargée de contrôler certains des principaux actifs et droits des compétitions de la FIFA.
Le projet concerne notamment les compétitions masculines et féminines de l'organisation.
Selon la FIFA, ce nouveau modèle pourrait permettre d'attirer jusqu'à 4,2 milliards de dollars, avec l'ambition d'accroître les revenus disponibles pour les associations membres et de soutenir davantage le développement du football mondial.
Mais cette initiative a rapidement provoqué de fortes résistances.
L'UEFA, la CONCACAF, l'AFC et la CONMEBOL ont rejeté le projet, faisant apparaître une importante fracture au sein du football international.
À l'inverse, la Confédération africaine de football (CAF), l'Association argentine de football et plusieurs autres fédérations nationales ont apporté leur soutien à Infantino.
La prise de position française vient donc renforcer le camp des acteurs qui demandent des garanties supplémentaires sur la gouvernance et la gestion commerciale de la FIFA.
Un désaveu qui change la donne
La décision de la FFF intervient quelques jours après le refus de la Belgique d'apporter son soutien à la candidature d'Infantino.
L'accumulation de ces prises de position donne une nouvelle dimension à la contestation.
Pour le président sortant, le problème n'est pas seulement de trouver un adversaire à l'élection. Il doit désormais préserver une coalition suffisamment large de fédérations nationales pour sécuriser sa réélection.
La FIFA fonctionne en effet sur une logique électorale dans laquelle chaque association membre dispose d'une voix au Congrès. Dans ce contexte, le soutien des grandes fédérations européennes conserve une portée politique considérable.
L'Afrique reste un soutien important
Le retrait français ne signifie toutefois pas que Gianni Infantino se retrouve isolé.
Le patron de la FIFA conserve notamment le soutien de la CAF, un allié stratégique compte tenu du poids électoral du football africain.
Depuis son arrivée à la tête de l'instance mondiale en 2016, Infantino a également développé une relation étroite avec de nombreuses fédérations africaines à travers les programmes de développement de la FIFA.
Cette fracture entre les positions européennes et celles d'une partie du football africain pourrait ainsi devenir l'un des éléments déterminants de la campagne à venir.
Infantino face à une élection plus disputée ?
Âgé de 56 ans, Gianni Infantino a été élu président de la FIFA en février 2016 lors d'un congrès extraordinaire. Il a ensuite été réélu à deux reprises sans opposition.
La prochaine élection est programmée pour mars 2027.
Mais cette fois, le contexte est différent.
Les candidatures devront être déposées avant le 18 novembre, ce qui laisse encore du temps aux éventuels prétendants pour se déclarer et aux différentes fédérations pour arrêter leur stratégie.
Le retrait de la France ne condamne évidemment pas la candidature d'Infantino. Mais il constitue un signal politique majeur.
Car après la Belgique, la contestation gagne désormais l'une des fédérations les plus influentes du football européen.
La bataille de la gouvernance est lancée
Au-delà du nom du prochain président, c'est désormais le modèle de gouvernance de la FIFA qui se retrouve au centre du débat.
La FFF veut ouvrir une réflexion sur une organisation plus transparente, plus indépendante et davantage concertée avec les acteurs du football.
Gianni Infantino devra donc défendre son bilan, mais aussi convaincre que les projets controversés portés sous sa présidence peuvent s'inscrire dans un cadre de gouvernance suffisamment transparent.
À six mois environ du scrutin, la bataille pour la présidence de la FIFA vient clairement de changer de dimension.
Major FIFA blow: France withdraws support for Gianni Infantino
The French Football Federation (FFF) has withdrawn its support for FIFA president Gianni Infantino ahead of the 2027 presidential election. The decision marks a major political setback for the FIFA chief and comes amid growing concerns over the governing body's transparency and governance.
Gianni Infantino has lost another major European supporter ahead of the next FIFA presidential election.
The French Football Federation (FFF) announced that it would no longer support Infantino's bid for another term as FIFA president following a meeting of its executive committee.
The decision represents a significant change of position. The FFF had previously supported Infantino when he was the only candidate for the presidency.
However, the French federation said several developments over the past two months had led it to reconsider its position.
The FFF is now calling for a major reform of FIFA's governance.
France calls for a return of trust
The FFF wants a new project for world football to be developed in consultation with confederations, national associations and all stakeholders, including players and supporters.
The objective is broader than the upcoming FIFA election.
The French federation wants to restore trust, strengthen transparency, guarantee independence and ensure greater standards of integrity within FIFA's leadership.
The FFF also announced plans to launch consultations with French and international experts on governance, including specialists outside the sporting sector.
The move represents a major shift for a federation that had previously backed Infantino.
FIFA Forward Enterprise at the heart of the dispute
One of the main sources of tension is FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE), the proposed commercial structure promoted under Infantino's leadership.
The project would place major FIFA commercial assets and competition rights under a dedicated commercial structure, covering key men's and women's competitions.
FIFA has argued that the model could generate as much as $4.2 billion in investment, potentially increasing revenues available to member associations and supporting football development worldwide.
The initiative, however, has faced strong opposition.
UEFA, CONCACAF, AFC and CONMEBOL have rejected the proposal, highlighting a major divide within international football.
At the same time, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), the Argentine Football Association and several other national associations have backed Infantino.
France's decision therefore strengthens the group calling for greater safeguards over FIFA's governance and commercial strategy.
A major political setback for Infantino
The French decision comes shortly after Belgium also refused to support Infantino's candidacy.
The growing number of critical voices gives the dispute a new political dimension.
Infantino's challenge is not simply to find potential rivals. He must now maintain a broad coalition of national associations if he wants to secure another term.
Each FIFA member association has one vote at the FIFA Congress, making the support of major football federations politically significant.
Africa remains an important Infantino ally
The French decision does not mean that Infantino has lost his support base.
The FIFA president retains the backing of the Confederation of African Football, an important ally given the voting strength of African football.
Infantino has also strengthened relations with many African national associations through FIFA development programmes since taking office in 2016.
The contrast between positions in Europe and Africa could therefore become an important feature of the campaign.
A more contested FIFA election?
Infantino, 56, was elected FIFA president in February 2016 at an extraordinary congress.
He was subsequently re-elected twice without opposition.
The next presidential election is scheduled for March 2027, with candidates required to submit their nominations by November 18.
The French decision does not mean Infantino's re-election is in immediate danger.
But it is a significant political warning.
After Belgium, another influential European federation has now withdrawn its support.
The governance battle has begun
The debate surrounding the 2027 FIFA election is increasingly becoming a debate about the organization's governance model.
France wants a more transparent, independent and consultative FIFA.
Infantino will therefore have to defend not only his record but also the governance model behind controversial initiatives such as FIFA Forward Enterprise.
With the election approaching, the battle for FIFA's presidency has clearly entered a new phase.
