Google Maps rebaptise le lac Ontario « lac America » aux États-Unis : le Canada dit non
La bataille autour du nom du lac Ontario prend une nouvelle dimension. Google Maps affiche désormais « lac America » pour les utilisateurs situés aux États-Unis, après la décision de Donald Trump de renommer officiellement le plan d’eau. Au Canada, cette appellation est fermement rejetée.
Le lac Ontario change de nom sur Google Maps, du moins de l’autre côté de la frontière américaine. Le service de cartographie de Google a commencé à afficher « lac America » pour ses utilisateurs situés aux États-Unis.
Concrètement, lorsqu’un internaute américain saisit « lac Ontario » dans la barre de recherche de Google Maps, la plateforme transforme automatiquement la requête en « lac America » et redirige vers le même plan d’eau.
À l’extérieur des États-Unis, la situation est différente. La recherche fait apparaître « lac Ontario (lac America) », tandis que la carte continue d'afficher le nom historique de lac Ontario.
Donald Trump impose le changement de nom
Cette modification intervient après une décision politique prise à Washington. Le président américain Donald Trump a signé, le 27 août, un décret renommant le lac Ontario en « lac America », avec une entrée en vigueur immédiate.
La décision américaine ne se limite donc plus au registre politique ou administratif. Son apparition sur Google Maps lui donne désormais une visibilité concrète auprès de millions d’utilisateurs.
Le choix du nouveau nom s'inscrit dans la volonté de l'administration Trump de mettre en avant une terminologie américaine pour plusieurs lieux emblématiques. Mais dans le cas du lac Ontario, le dossier prend une dimension particulière en raison de son caractère transfrontalier.
Ottawa refuse de tourner la page du lac Ontario
Du côté canadien, pas question d’abandonner le nom historique.
Le Premier ministre canadien Mark Carney a rappelé que le lac porte son nom depuis plus de 400 ans, soit bien avant même la création des États-Unis en tant qu'État indépendant.
Pour Ottawa, cette profondeur historique constitue un argument majeur. Le lac Ontario fait partie du paysage géographique, historique et culturel canadien et demeure officiellement désigné sous ce nom au Canada.
Mark Carney a ainsi indiqué que le Canada continuerait à l'appeler lac Ontario.
Un même lac, deux noms selon le pays
La décision crée une situation pour le moins singulière : un même plan d'eau pourrait désormais être désigné différemment selon le pays depuis lequel l'utilisateur consulte Google Maps.
Aux États-Unis : lac America.
Au Canada : lac Ontario.
Depuis d'autres pays : lac Ontario (lac America) dans la recherche, alors que la carte conserve le nom Ontario.
Cette différence illustre les difficultés qui peuvent apparaître lorsqu'une décision nationale concerne un espace géographique partagé par plusieurs États.
Une querelle de toponymie qui dépasse les cartes
Au-delà de Google Maps, cette affaire touche à la toponymie, c'est-à-dire à l'étude et à la gestion des noms géographiques. Dans les relations internationales, le nom attribué à un territoire ou à un élément géographique peut revêtir une forte dimension politique et historique.
Le lac Ontario est l'un des cinq Grands Lacs d'Amérique du Nord. Il est partagé entre les États-Unis et le Canada et constitue un élément majeur du système hydrologique reliant les Grands Lacs au fleuve Saint-Laurent.
Le bras de fer autour de son appellation rappelle ainsi que les noms géographiques ne sont jamais totalement neutres lorsqu'ils touchent à l'histoire, à la souveraineté ou à l'identité nationale.
Pour l'heure, Google Maps applique donc une distinction géographique à son affichage, tandis que les autorités canadiennes maintiennent le nom de lac Ontario.
La carte est numérique. Mais derrière le changement de nom, c'est bien une bataille historique et diplomatique qui se joue entre Washington et Ottawa.

Outside the United States, the display is different. A search for “Lake Ontario” shows “Lake Ontario (Lake America)” in the search bar, while the original name remains visible on the map itself.
Donald Trump orders the name change
The Google Maps change follows a political decision in Washington. US President Donald Trump signed a decree on August 27 renaming the lake “Lake America,” with the order taking immediate effect.
The decision has therefore moved beyond political and administrative circles. Its implementation on Google Maps gives the new name direct visibility to millions of users.
The issue is particularly sensitive because Lake Ontario is a transboundary body of water, shared by the United States and Canada.
Canada refuses to abandon the historic name
Canada has firmly rejected the change.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney pointed out that the lake has carried the name for more than 400 years, long before the United States became an independent country.
For Ottawa, that historical record is central to the issue. Lake Ontario remains an important part of Canada's geographical, historical and cultural landscape, and Canadian authorities continue to use its traditional name.
Carney has therefore made it clear that Canada will continue calling it Lake Ontario.

The dispute could lead to an unusual situation: the same body of water may now be identified differently depending on the country from which Google Maps is being accessed.
In the United States: Lake America.
In Canada: Lake Ontario.
Elsewhere: the search may display “Lake Ontario (Lake America)”, while the map itself continues to show Lake Ontario.
The situation highlights the complications that can arise when a national naming decision concerns a geographical feature shared by two countries.
A naming dispute that goes beyond Google Maps
The controversy involves more than a simple change on a digital map. It touches on toponymy, the study and management of geographical names. Place names can carry significant historical, political and cultural meaning, particularly when they involve territories or geographical features shared by different countries.
Lake Ontario is one of North America's five Great Lakes. It lies along the US-Canadian border and forms part of the Great Lakes–St. Lawrence waterway system.
The disagreement over its name therefore illustrates how geographical names can become political symbols.
For now, Google Maps is applying different naming conventions depending on the user's location, while Canadian authorities continue to recognize the traditional name, Lake Ontario.
The map may be digital, but the dispute behind the name is very real.
