WAFCON 2026: From Wildcards to Finalists, Cameroon’s Incredible Lionesses Revival
Cameroon are through to the final of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations. Initially brought back into the tournament as a repechage team and far from the list of favourites, the Indomitable Lionesses stunned hosts Morocco to reach the final. For coach Valentine Nguele and her players, this qualification represents resilience, belief and an extraordinary collective achievement.
Few people expected Cameroon to come this far. Yet the Indomitable Lionesses are now standing at the gates of glory: they are finalists at WAFCON 2026.
Against Morocco, the host nation and one of the tournament's strongest contenders, Cameroon produced a performance full of intensity and determination to secure their place in the final.
The achievement is even more remarkable considering how the team entered the competition. Cameroon were reinstated into the tournament, but instead of allowing that status to define them, the Lionesses turned it into a source of motivation.
Match after match, they have built their campaign on tactical discipline, collective solidarity and remarkable mental strength.
Valentine Nguele: “We have come from very far”
Speaking after the match, Cameroon coach Valentine Nguele could not hide her pride and emotion.
For the coach, this journey belongs to a group that refused to be limited by expectations.
“We have come from very far. We are people who were brought back into the competition, so we do not put pressure on ourselves. We take it match by match and we leave everything in the hands of the Lord.”
Cameroon’s approach has paid off.
Without allowing external expectations to weigh them down, the Indomitable Lionesses have remained focused on their football, gradually building confidence and momentum throughout the competition.
Nguele also used the moment to send a powerful message to women working in football coaching.
“As a woman, it is a source of pride to see this journey. I also want to show my sisters who do this job that they must go all the way. It is not easy at all. Accept to train yourselves and resist all kinds of storms. I dedicate this victory to all women coaches.”
Her words gave the qualification a significance that goes beyond football.
A victory for women coaches and the Cameroonian people
Valentine Nguele also highlighted the importance of faith and the support received from Cameroonians throughout the tournament.
“Thank you to Almighty God, He is wonderful. I also thank the Cameroonian people who pushed us and supported us.”
Since the beginning of WAFCON 2026, Cameroon have transformed their outsider status into a genuine strength.
Every match has become another chapter in an adventure few observers predicted would reach the final.
Against Morocco, in the challenging atmosphere of a match against the host nation, the Lionesses once again showed their ability to withstand pressure.
Aboudi Onguene: “We simply had to follow the coach’s instructions”
Speaking in the mixed zone after the victory, experienced Cameroon forward Aboudi Onguene summed up the mindset of the squad.
The Lionesses knew they were facing a difficult task against the host country. But their mission was clear: remain disciplined and follow the tactical plan.
“We knew we were going to play against the host country. We knew it was going to be a difficult match. And as I said yesterday during the press conference, we simply had to respect the coach’s instructions, and here we are in the final.”
For Onguene, the qualification is the result of collective discipline and an unwavering belief within the group.
She then summed up Cameroon’s remarkable journey in one sentence:
“Going from being reinstated to becoming finalists, it had to be done, and we promise that we will play the final with determination.”
From outsiders to finalists, Cameroon want to finish the job
The story of Cameroon’s campaign is already one of the most remarkable narratives of WAFCON 2026.
But the Indomitable Lionesses do not want to stop at being the tournament’s surprise package.
They have overcome the odds, eliminated Morocco and reached the biggest match of the competition. One final step remains.
Ninety minutes — or more if necessary — now separate Cameroon from an even greater achievement.
Armed with tactical discipline, mental strength and the determination expressed by Aboudi Onguene, the Lionesses are heading into the final with a clear mindset: they have nothing to lose, but history to write.
From being reinstated into the competition to becoming finalists, Cameroon have already made their mark on WAFCON 2026.
Now, the Indomitable Lionesses have one last battle ahead.
And they are ready to fight until the very end.
