MALI'S GOLD Shines Bright: B2Gold Secures Giant Permit at Menankoto

The Malian government has officially given B2Gold Mali Resources the green light to operate the Menankoto-Sud gold deposit. A 12-year contract promising to boost the local economy and consolidate the partnership between Bamako and the Canadian mining giant.

The Council of Ministers adopted this Friday, August 7, 2026, a draft decree of paramount importance for the national mining sector. It concerns the granting of a large-scale gold mine exploitation permit to B2Gold Mali Resources SARL at the Menankoto-Sud site, located in the Kéniéba circle, Kayes region. A decision marking a decisive turning point for the future of the Fekola Complex and, consequently, for the Malian economy .

A 12-Year Permit for a Promising Deposit

With a maximum duration of twelve years, this permit follows significant research work that confirmed the existence of an economically exploitable gold deposit. The Menankoto-Sud concession, born in May 2025 from the merger of the Bakolobi, Menankoto-Sud, and Bantako-Nord research permits, is about to become a pillar of the country's gold production .

Located only about twenty kilometers from the Fekola mining complex, the site already benefits from advanced logistical infrastructure built by B2Gold, including a road to transport ore to the Fekola plant. This geographical proximity is a major asset that will reduce costs and accelerate production .

A Win-Win Dynamic for the Malian State and B2Gold

This project is part of the new dynamic of partnership between the Malian State and mining investors, in accordance with the Mining Code adopted in 2023. Under the terms of the agreement, the Fekola Regional project, comprising Menankoto and the Dandoko permit, will be held 65% by B2Gold and 35% by the Malian State, compared to 80/20 for the historic Fekola mine. A significant step forward that strengthens the State's participation in the exploitation of its resources .

For the Canadian group, this green light removes a strategic obstacle that had weighed on its production forecasts for many months. The absence of this permit had hindered any mining activity in the area in 2025 and during the first quarter of 2026. B2Gold can now look to the future with confidence. The group plans a gradual ramp-up of operations by the end of 2027, to reach an annual production of over 150,000 ounces of gold from 2028 to the mid-2030s .

A Strong Signal for the Malian Mining Industry

Obtaining this permit is seen as a positive signal for the sector, in a context of declining national industrial production, from a record 66.5 tons in 2023 to 42.2 tons in 2025. This project, which will extend the life of the Fekola Complex by an additional decade, is a growth driver for employment and local content. B2Gold Mali, which employs over 3,300 people (98% of whom are nationals) and has invested over $2 billion since 2014, is strengthening its roots in the country .

As Mali multiplies initiatives to secure and diversify its economy, this successful partnership with B2Gold for Menankoto-Sud appears as a model of collaboration, combining national sovereignty and international expertise for the benefit of populations. The construction of a school in Dioulafoundou by B2Gold, at a cost of 44 million CFA francs, illustrates this desire to invest beyond the purely mining aspect .
