Despite political pressure and administrative repression, Cameroon’s opposition party, the Cameroon Renaissance Movement (MRC), successfully held its national convention on Sunday, December 21, via videoconference. The outcome was unequivocal: Maurice Kamto was re-elected party president with an overwhelming 95% of the vote.

Originally scheduled to take place in person, the convention was banned by the authorities, reflecting ongoing tensions between the ruling regime and the MRC. Undeterred, the party swiftly adapted by moving the event online, ensuring institutional continuity and compliance with its internal statutes.

Maurice Kamto, recipient of the Boutros Boutros-Ghali Peace Prize, officially resumes leadership of the party he founded. This landslide victory consolidates his authority and reinforces his position as a leading figure in Cameroon’s opposition at a time when the question of democratic change remains highly sensitive.

For party officials and supporters, the vote sends a strong message: despite sustained pressure, the MRC remains united, structured, and committed to its political struggle through peaceful and lawful means.
