Formé avec l’instinct des joueurs de rue, Baleba s’est d’abord construit autour du ballon. Très loin des schémas tactiques ou des duels musclés, le jeune Carlos privilégiait le dribble, l’audace et le spectacle. « Je ne m’entraînais pas à tacler mais à dribbler comme Ronaldinho ou Neymar », raconte-t-il. Une philosophie transmise par son père, qui l’encourageait à défier tout le terrain balle au pied, jusqu’au but adverse. Un football libre, instinctif, presque insolent.
Mais le haut niveau impose ses lois. Après son passage remarqué à Lille, où il excellait dans les petits espaces en conservant le ballon avec intelligence, Baleba découvre une autre dimension du jeu en rejoignant Brighton en Premier League. Le choc est immédiat. « Le football anglais m’a surpris. Il y avait beaucoup d’intensité », admet-il. Ici, pas de répit : il faut courir, presser, répéter les efforts, répondre au combat physique sans renier la technique.
Contraint de se réinventer, le Camerounais ajuste son style. Plus d’impact, plus de volume de jeu, plus d’agressivité dans le bon sens du terme. Une mutation réussie, qui fait aujourd’hui de lui un milieu moderne, complet, capable de récupérer, porter le ballon et casser les lignes.
Comme beaucoup de jeunes joueurs, Baleba n’échappe pas à la pression. « Parfois, je suis nerveux », reconnaît-il. Mais ses rituels sont simples : la musique, puis le coup de sifflet initial. À cet instant précis, la peur disparaît, laissant place à l’instinct du compétiteur.
Et au bout du chemin, un rêve clair, assumé, partagé par tout un peuple : remporter la Coupe d’Afrique des Nations avec le Cameroun. Une ambition à la hauteur de son parcours. Carlos Baleba avance, déterminé, avec le ballon comme boussole et la tanière des Lions comme horizon.

For Carlos Baleba, football has never been just a game. It has always been a way of life. “I ate football, I slept football,” says the Cameroonian midfielder, whose journey reflects raw talent, passion and constant evolution.
As a child, Baleba was shaped by street football instincts. Tackling was never the priority. Dribbling was. Inspired by legends like Ronaldinho and Neymar, he learned to eliminate opponents with flair and confidence. “My father wanted me to dribble the whole pitch and score,” he recalls. A bold, expressive style that defined his early years.
His rise at Lille confirmed his technical quality. Comfortable in tight spaces, calm on the ball, Baleba controlled the tempo with intelligence. But his move to Brighton in the English Premier League marked a turning point. “English football surprised me. There was so much intensity,” he admits.
In England, adaptation was mandatory. More running, more physical duels, more defensive responsibility. Baleba embraced the challenge, transforming his game without losing his identity. Today, he is a dynamic, aggressive and modern midfielder, capable of impacting both ends of the pitch.
Pressure is part of the journey. “Sometimes I’m nervous,” he says. But once the music fades and the referee blows the whistle, fear disappears. Only football remains.
And above all, one dream stands above the rest: winning the Africa Cup of Nations with Cameroon. A clear ambition. A national mission. Carlos Baleba is ready.
