A major political shift has unfolded in Seychelles as former Parliament Speaker Patrick Herminie, leader of the United Seychelles Party, has won the presidential election with 52.7% of the vote, defeating incumbent Wavel Ramkalawan, according to official results reported by Reuters.



The runoff was called after no candidate secured an outright majority in the first round, where Herminie had already taken the lead with 48.8% against 46.4% for Ramkalawan, as reported earlier by the local newspaper Nation.



With this victory, Patrick Herminie ends Wavel Ramkalawan’s five-year rule and begins a new five-year term at the helm of the Indian Ocean archipelago — a peaceful democratic transition praised by regional observers.
