Selon l’Autorité aéronautique du Cameroun (CCAA), l’enveloppe globale allouée atteint 490 millions FCFA. Une première tranche de 200 millions FCFA sera débloquée dès 2025 pour indemniser les occupants directement affectés. Une deuxième phase, programmée pour 2026, couvrira les pertes agricoles. Les débats ont aussi porté sur la liste des bénéficiaires et les pièces justificatives exigées, deux points sensibles qui alimentent déjà interrogations et inquiétudes dans les quartiers concernés.
Au-delà des indemnisations, l’enjeu est d’envergure stratégique. L’aéroport de Bertoua, jugé trop exigu, doit être modernisé afin de renforcer l’interconnexion régionale et stimuler l’économie de l’Est. Ce chantier figure dans le Programme d’investissement prioritaire (PIP) 2024-2026, doté de 72 milliards FCFA pour la réhabilitation des aéroports de Bertoua, Kribi et Tiko.
Prévu pour démarrer en 2024 et s’achever en 2027, le projet reste attendu sur le terrain. En effet, dès 2022, le chef de l’État avait instruit la CCAA d’accélérer la signature des contrats avec les entreprises choisies. Trois ans plus tard, les riverains espèrent toujours voir les premiers engins donner corps à cette promesse de modernisation.
Bertoua Airport Expansion: 490 Million FCFA Compensation Announced, But Residents Still Waiting for Works
In Bertoua, the long-awaited airport expansion project has entered a new phase. On August 20, 2025, the Prefect of Lom-et-Djerem, Nkwedi Simon Ndoh, met with residents of the Aviation and Mboutoutou neighborhoods to discuss the compensation plan for land and crop losses.
According to the Cameroon Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA), a total package of 490 million FCFA has been earmarked. An initial installment of 200 million FCFA will be paid in 2025 to directly affected residents, while a second phase in 2026 will cover agricultural losses. Discussions also focused on the registration of beneficiaries and required documentation, issues that have already sparked concerns among locals.
Beyond compensations, the project is of strategic importance. Bertoua’s airport, considered too small, is set to be modernized to boost regional interconnectivity and stimulate the economy of the East. It is part of the Priority Investment Program (PIP) 2024-2026, which allocates 72 billion FCFA for the rehabilitation of the airports in Bertoua, Kribi, and Tiko.
Initially scheduled to begin in 2024 and end in 2027, the project remains stalled. Back in 2022, President Paul Biya instructed the CCAA to speed up contract signings with selected companies. Three years later, residents are still waiting for the first bulldozers to arrive.
