Cameroon – Judicial Earthquake: Former Camair-Co CEO Sentenced to Life for Embezzlement

In a landmark ruling, the Special Criminal Court has sentenced Alex Van Elk, former CEO of Camair-Co, to life imprisonment in absentia for aggravated embezzlement of public funds.

According to L’Indépendant, this is the first time in Cameroon’s history that a trade union has secured such a heavy sentence against an expatriate over corruption charges. The January 21, 2025 verdict also includes an international arrest warrant and ten-year suspension of civil rights.

With Interpol now on his trail, speculation grows: will Van Elk reveal the names of his accomplices to negotiate a lighter sentence? The judicial saga is far from over.
