Sahel, Global Terrorism Hotspot in 2024: 51% of Worldwide Deaths, Burkina Faso Hit Hardest
The latest "Global Terrorism Index" report reveals a dramatic surge in jihadist attacks in the region, with nearly 3,900 deaths in one year. Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger remain prime targets for armed groups.
The Sahel region has solidified its status as the "global epicenter of terrorism," according to the annual "Global Terrorism Index" report, cited by Africanews. In 2024, this area accounted for 51% of global terrorism-related deaths and 19% of total attacks worldwide. A devastating toll that keeps worsening: five years ago, the numbers were ten times lower.
Burkina Faso, Prime Target
Burkina Faso remains the most affected country, with over 700 deaths recorded in 2024. Attacks by the Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM) and other jihadist factions relentlessly target civilians and defense forces.
Mali and Niger Under Siege
In Mali, radical Islamists struck at the heart of the capital, Bamako, with a bloody assault on a police academy in 2023 (60 soldiers killed). Niger, meanwhile, suffered more than 400 deaths in attacks targeting villages, public gatherings, and military outposts.
A Spreading Regional Threat
In total, nearly 3,900 people were killed in the Sahel in 2024, highlighting the failure of current counterterrorism strategies. The region, spanning ten countries, remains a haven for armed groups, despite international interventions.
With this escalating security crisis, should Sahelian states and their partners rethink their approach? The answer seems urgent—and unavoidable.
