Cameroon Launches Groundbreaking Platform to Ensure Cocoa and Coffee Quality
Under the leadership of the Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development (Minader), Gabriel Mbairobe, Cameroon officially launched a regulatory and health monitoring platform for cocoa and coffee sectors this Wednesday. A strategic tool to secure international market access and enhance the competitiveness of Cameroonian products.
A Sanitary and Regulatory Shield
Established in January 2023, this platform brings together the government and private sector stakeholders, coordinated by the Cocoa and Coffee Interprofessional Council (CICC). Its mission? Monitor international standards in real-time, anticipate health risks (pesticide residues, mycotoxins, heavy metals), and prevent costly rejections at borders.
"The goal is clear: to ensure our cocoa and coffee meet the most stringent standards," emphasized the Minister. The platform will also alert on interceptions by importing countries and assess the chemical and microbiological compliance of beans.
Cameroon, a Rising Star in "Fine Cocoa"
This initiative is part of a broader strategy. For the past decade, the country has been implementing measures to enhance production quality: post-harvest treatment centers, quality-based premiums (5 billion FCFA distributed since 2017), and, most notably, its admission in June 2023 into the exclusive circle of "fine cocoa" producers, as recognized by the ICCO.
"Like a grand cru wine, fine cocoa stands out for its aroma and taste. The secret? Meticulous post-harvest processing," explains Michel Arrion, ICCO Executive Director. Proof of success: during the 2020-2021 season, Cameroon recorded its highest volume and percentage of Grade I beans in twenty years.
The Goal: Zero Defects, Zero Rejections
With this new platform, Cameroon aims to dominate the value chain. The objective? Avoid price reductions and position its beans as premium references. A crucial challenge for a sector that plays a key role in the national economy.
