The Spanish football championship is one of the oldest and most well-known.Football matches today gather millions of fans in front of TV screens and are in high demand among bettors.
The first football matches were held in the late 1920s. However, football in this country existed before, and it all started with the King's Cup. In 1902, Carlos Padros, suggested arranging a football tournament to commemorate the coronation of King Alfonso XIII :
- The first tournament was called Copa de la Coronación.
- The Coronation Cup still stands in the Club Museum of Athletic Bilbao as an important part of the club's history.
- This trophy is regarded as a precursor to the Spanish Cup and is not considered official by the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
The Spanish Cup has been considered the national competition of Spain since 1903. This lasted 24 years - until, in April 1928, Jose Maria Acha, suggested the creation of the Campeonato de Liga. Since it was the first Spanish football league, there were only 10 teams in the table. Present predominant forces of the Spanish football league quickly won their first titles: FC Barcelona got a victory in 1929 (and became the first Spanish football champion in history). Real Madrid won the championship in 1932 and 1933. However, from the very beginning, there was another team ahead - Athletic Bilbao. Football today's matches are demonstrating a strong growth of Spanish professional football.
Current results and table of La Liga
The current La Liga today results demonstrate that the modern Spanish football championship remains extremely competitive. The "golden age" of the top clubs in La Liga started after World War II. For Real Madrid this era is associated with the name of President Santiago Bernabéu. During his administration from 1954 to 1978 this club won as many as 16 championship titles. 1951 is an important date in the history of FC Barcelona, when the legendary Ladislao Kubala, the man for whom the Camp Nou stadium was built, signed a contract with the club. Kubala charmed FC Barcelona fans to the point that they ran out of seats in the stadium. Therefore, this club decided to build a new stadium, which was commissioned in 1957. Alfredo Di Stefano, an Argentine striker who moved to Real Madrid in 1953, was the only player who was then compared to Kubala.
And it is not only about the rivalry of two predominant forces: Real Madrid and another one football club Barcelona. Competition in the standings makes it possible for different clubs to compete for the championship or the national cup, which is confirmed by La Liga today's result, which can be found on football statistics websites.
