Cameroun - Télécommunication. Telecommunications: Vodafone Ends Operations In Cameroon

Mobile network service provider, Vodafone Cameroon has put a stop to its operations in the country, citing unsustainability of the venture. The company said it was ceasing operations with immediate effect from Friday November 10, 2017, following a government suspension.

“After the withdrawal of our license by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the Telecoms Regulatory Board and the suspension of our services from 14 September 2017, the operator of the company, Afrimax Cameroon, concluded reluctantly that it was no longer commercially viable to resume services in Cameroon.

As a result, Vodafone Cameroon has ceased operations with immediate effect,” the operator said in an official press release. Vodafone said it will automatically refund to its subscribers their last bundle and outstanding packages by the end of November. “You will receive a cash refund corresponding to your outstanding balance through a mobile money transfer on the mobile number registered during your activation with us,” the company noted on its website.

The operator which goes off the Cameroon telecoms market, was being operated by Afrimax Cameroon; the subsidiary of Afrimax Group, using the Vodafone brand under a licensing agreement with Vodafone Group. Vodafone Cameroon had been operating with the license of Northwave Sarl, a company it acquired before commencing operations.

On September 14, 2017, Vodafone Cameroon halted it operations indefinitely on instructions of the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the Telecommunications Regulatory Board.

Authorities had called on Vodafone to get its own license, holding that the use of Northwave Sarl’s license was illegal as licenses are personal, non-transferable and do not confer any right of exclusivity under Cameroonian law.

We learned the telecoms operator later filed for a license under Afrimax Cameroon, but little is known about the outcome of the process.
