Thousands of people die every day around the world from infections acquired while receiving health care. Hands are the main pathways of germ transmission during treatment. It is in this light that the first Hand Hygiene Day of the Yaounde Central Hospital is being organised in Yaounde.

The event began with a training on hand hygiene yesterday, March 29, 2016. Organised by the Hygiene and Sanitation Department of the Yaounde Central Hospital and the University Teaching Hospital of Montpelier France, the workshop aimed at training the staff on the basics of hand hygiene. Workers were given a questionnaires to test their knowledge on hand hygiene. There were 10 questions of which the first part was multiple choice and the second single answers. The questions centred on why, who, how and when to practise hand hygiene. This was followed by the practical phase during which the health workers were taught how to clean their hands before and after attending to patients.

One of the participants, Victorine Okpwae, an anaesthetics nurse said the training reminded them of basic aspects which have been neglected. “We passed through “La Boite de verité” to see if our hands are well disinfected”, she said. The Head of the Hygiene and sanitation Department, Albert Menounga said the good thing is that the Central Hospital produces the Hydro-Alcoholic solution which is used for cleaning hands. He said the solution is produced according to the norms of the World Health Organisation. An official ceremony to launch the first Hand Hygiene Day of the Yaounde Central Hospital will take place today, March 30, 2016.
