After the euphoria of the opening day, athletes taking part in the 18th edition of the university games have now settled to business fetching medals for their various institutions. The first medals in the competition were recorded in athletics with the finals in long jump, tricycle, shot put, 100m and 1500m track and field events.

INJS the up to a good start towards conserving her title by winning five medals on the first day of competition. INJS won gold in the women 1500m race through Etchu Ngeng Sylvie who covered the distance in 4.42.6.  The two silver medals were won by Ngo Derby Rachel and Eleme Asse Marie Gisele in the women’s long jump and 100m events respectively.

The University of Yaounde II is the second on the medal tally with equally five medals but with one gold, one silver and three bronze medals. The gold was won in the women’s 100m race by Abessolo Bivina Germaine while Onanena Amana won silver in the male category. Christian Albert Seppe, Angounougou Sanama and Abessolo Bivina again won bronze in 100m, long jump and shot put events respectively.

The University of Dschang is third on the medal count after haven won four medals; one gold, two silver and one bronze. However, there is likely going to be a shake up in the table as at press time, the semi finals and finals in the wrestling discipline were yet to be over. More medals are expected to come in today with more finals in athletics notably the 400m, 4x100 and 1500m tricycle events. There will also be finals in high jump, javelin throw and triple jump as well as the African wrestling, tennis and general animation.

The major innovations this year is the inclusion of Paralympics sports disciplines for handicapped students notably in athletics, table tennis and dynamophilie.
