USA. U.S.A To Cut Carbon Emissions

The United States of America has announced the revised Clean Power Plan aimed to cut greenhouse gas emissions  from US power stations by 32 per cent by the year 2030 compared to the 2005 levels, BBC reported citing President Barack Obama.

While unveiling the plan on Monday, August 3, 2015, Mr Obama called it “"the biggest, most important step we have ever taken" in tackling climate change. The measures, reports say, will place significant emphasis on wind and solar power and other renewable energy sources. "I'm convinced no challenge provides a greater threat to the future of the planet," BBC quoted Mr Obama as having said and added that, "There is such a thing as being too late." Justifying the importance of the plan despite stiff opposition, Barack Obama is quoted as saying, "We are the first generation to feel the impacts of climate change, and the last generation to be able to do something about it.” Stating that taking a stand against climate change is a “moral obligation,” he likened the plan to taking 166 million cars off the road in terms of environmental impact.

Responding to opponents who call the revised Clean Power Plan as a declaration of “a war on coal,” that will kill jobs, Mr Obama said, he was reinvesting in areas of the US known as “coal country.” "If we don't do it nobody will. America leads the way forward... that's what this plan is about. This is our moment to get something right and get something right for our kids.” Declaring that scare-monging tactics will not work to stop the proposal, Mr Obama said, “If we don't do it nobody will. The revised Clean Power Plan is the cornerstone of Mr Obama’s attempt to secure a global treaty on climate change in Paris at the end of 2015.  The most pressing issue now to ensure the applicability and workability of the plan. Reports says each U.S. State will have an emission-cutting goal assigned to it and must submit a proposal to the Environmental Protection Agency on how it will meet the target. The task will not be easy considering the dominance of the Republicans in both Houses of the Congress and also following reports which indicate that several State Governors were already saying they will simply ignore the plans.
