Can 2016. Female AFCON 2016: Local Authorities Concert For Successful Hosting

De-congesting Limbe and guaranteeing the safety of people is primordial for a successful Female Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2016, with the seaside resort as one of the hosting cities. This was the main message and appeal from Limbe local authorities who met on January 11, 2016. They called for the construction of a second access road into the city from Tiko, passing through Bimbia, to ease traffic.

Chaired by the Governor of the South West Region, Bernard Okalia Bilai, in the presence of the Secretary General in the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education, Dr. Tado Oumarou, the meeting was also aimed at rallying local support and seeking better ways of a successful hosting. During the meeting in Limbe, proposals were made to the custodians of the city and the Ministry of Sports and Physical Education on how to better make the international event a success. The Governor urged the population to give Government their total support before, during and after the games.

On behalf of the people, the Government Delegate to the Limbe City Council, Motanga Andrew Monjimba, suggested a second access road into the city, passing through Tiko to Bimbia and eventually Limbe. “This is to avoid traffic jams and ensure security during hosting, and also to ease evacuation after each match,” he said. Honorable Gladys Etomby called for the improvement of local medical facilities so as to better handle athletes’ health problems and those of visitors.

The issue of a name of the stadium was raised. Many locals have been calling the edifice Ngeme or Mokindi Stadium due to its location. The Chiefs of Limbe discussed this and a name was forwarded to Yaounde for approval. After the meeting, the Governor and team visited surrounding sites where supplementary works are going on by the Limbe Stadium. However, they were not impressed with the lagging nature of work.
